Samuel Devereux, a member of the Hoffman Estates High School Special Olympics Soccer Team, was named to the Illinois State Special Olympics Team.  With this announcement, Devereux will participate in the national Special Olympics competition in Seattle, Washington, in July.

“This is a big honor for him,” said Coach Julie Phelan.  “He is an excellent soccer player and a natural leader.”

Devereux tried out for the state team in June.

Lisa Lane, Devereux’s mother, said Special Olympics has been a great experience for her son from the start of his participation.

“It has helped him in every aspect of his life,” she said.  “When he was with his peers, it helped him to engage.”

With his placement on the state team, Devereux will have an opportunity to try out for the Team U.S.A. Special Olympics team.
