D211 Post: Hockey Club Honors D211 Teachers

The D211 Chiefs, a youth hockey organization made up of students from various District 211 schools, held a teacher appreciation night during their game against the Fox Valley Hawks Nov. 19.

The club decided to host the recognition evening after parent Ann Cygnar and others saw a youth league do something similar.  Cygnar said she was touched by what she saw.

“I think it’s important we let the teachers know how important they are,” she said.

Cygnar said that while this was the first year for the recognition, she plans to help the event continue every year.

Prior to the start of the game, District 211 teachers who had been invited by players, had the opportunity to meet with the players.  The teachers received a jersey and puck from the students.  At the start of the game, all teachers in the audience were asked to stand and be recognized.

“This was awesome,” said Zia Nathan, an English teacher at James B. Conant High School.  Nathan had been invited by defenseman and Conant student Sebastian Szeliga.

“It was really touching with Sebastian invited me,” Nathan said.
