While junior (SAT exam) and sophomore (PSAT 10 exam) students were involved in Illinois State Board of Education testing on April 10, senior and freshman students from Palatine High School used their day off to volunteer at local elementary schools as part of the PHS “Day of Service” program.  Seventy-five PHS students visited four Palatine elementary schools: Jane Addams, Lincoln, Virginia Lake, and Winston Campus where they volunteered in several capacities.  Volunteer opportunities included activities such as serving as a classroom aide, being a group leader to help students work on class projects, talking with students about what high school is like, reading with groups of students, sitting with students at lunch and playing with them at recess, and helping in music and physical education classes.

“Our students and the elementary school students both seemed to really enjoy the experience,” commented Palatine High School Social Studies Teacher Andrea Guthrie, who co-sponsored the event with department colleague Brittany Berleman.  “And, the teachers and building principals were very appreciative!”
