D211 Post: The District 211 Internship Program Changed Lives this Summer


Twenty-two local companies provided 83 High School District 211 students with a variety of career choices to explore this summer through internships.  While most high school students never get this opportunity, the District 211 internship program helps promote the District’s vision to prepare students to be college and career ready.

Following their summer internships, students shared comments about their experiences.

“This experience is something I will never forget as my first real foray into the medical field,” commented a physician intern at Arlington Pediatrics.

“I definitely felt like part of the team, and it strengthened my aspirations to become a pediatric nurse practitioner tenfold,” added a nursing intern, also at Arlington Pediatrics.

An architecture intern at ARCON Associates wrote, “It was without a doubt a great experience. I loved every second of learning new programs like CAD and Sketch Up, using my Revit skills, and going on sites.  The entire internship was an eye opener for me as I learned that I will truly enjoy pursuing architecture after college.”

After sharing a presentation she had worked on, a manufacturing intern at Innovative Components said, “I’m having a great summer working with Innovative Components.  I have learned so much and love coming to work. I shadowed every department so I could get the feel of how a company works which was very beneficial to know for future jobs.”

Motorola hosted a morning of presentations by student interns after their weeklong internships.  After demonstrating the Apps they worked on, these students talked about using teamwork, communication, time management, and collaboration.  The executives were impressed with the quality of questions the group asked throughout the week.

“The reaction of these students is inspiring,” said Jan Brottman, District 211 internship coordinator.  “The opportunities these businesses are providing cannot be replicated in the classroom.  The employability skills these students are acquiring are so valuable for their future.  The connections they can bring back to the classroom also are beneficial to teachers in the District.  And, the risk of an under skilled workforce proves the need for businesses to participate in our internship program.”

“An unexpected positive result of hosting an intern was the effect on our employees rising up and teaching their craft which made them even better at their job,” said Greg Ohm from Bingaman Precision in Rolling Meadows.

“You don’t know what you’re missing if you don’t do it,” added Robyn Safron from Hydraforce in Lincolnshire, commenting about hosting a summer intern.
