Township High School District 211 was named a 2015 District of Distinction by District Administration magazine for the re-envisioning of student discipline programs.

The publication describes Districts of Distinction as “a national recognition program to honor school districts that are demonstrating education excellence with innovative approaches and ideas that work, and can be replicated by other districts across the country.”

District 211 was among 62 districts that were honored in the March 2015 round of Districts of Distinction.

“This recognition is the result of a great deal of effort and good work by our schools to create connections for students and engage them in practices that balance accountability and ownership for the culture within their school,” said Matt Hildebrand, director of Administrative Services at District 211.

Each high school in District 211 has adopted similar but unique behavior and discipline approaches when working with students. Throughout the past five years, each high school’s discipline team of administrators has adopted methods that strive to change students’ behavior through supportive connections within the school and reducing exclusionary consequences, such as suspensions.

With these new methods, District 211 administrators and intervention teams are combating truancy, absenteeism, and student misconduct through more effective school-based interventions. With each school looking at individual student cases to help identify the root causes of misbehavior – which are often related to environmental factors outside of school – school officials are helping students get on the right track before it’s too late.

“We are pleased to honor Township as a District of Distinction,” JD Solomon, editorial director at District Administration magazine, said in a statement. “Like all our honorees, Township High School District 211 serves as a model for school leaders across the country.”
