FHS Symphony Band Earns Top Honors
The Fremd High School Wind Symphony recently earned top honors and first place of the 6A Division at the “State of Illinois Concert Band Contest” hosted by Illinois State University on Saturday April 28. The band received straight “Superior/Division 1” ratings from all three collegiate judges representing the University of Illinois, University of Kentucky, and Bowling Green State University.
The band also was awarded the fourth-highest point total out of 24 bands participating in the two-day festival. The festival took place in the ISU Center for the Performing Arts with the band performing “American Overture for Band” by Joseph Wilcox Jenkins, “Down Longford Way” by Percy Grainger, and “Machu Picchu” by famed Japanese composer Satoshi Yagisawa.
The Fremd Wind Symphony also was awarded three straight “Superior/Division 1″ ratings at the “Chicagoland Invitational Concert Band Festival” hosted by Hersey High School on April 14.
In addition to their performance, the students greatly enjoyed a 45-minute educational clinic with collegiate band director Dr. Peter Griffin (Elmhurst College). The Fremd Wind Symphony is under the direction of Matthew Moore (Director of Bands).
