Registration Open for 2017 GEMS (Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science) Conference

Registration is now open for the seventh-annual GEMS (Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science) Conference. The conference will be held at Conant High School on Feb. 4, 2017, for 5th and 6th grade girls and their parents in School Districts 15 and 54, and private schools within the District 211 attendance area.  The event will run from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Girls will learn about careers in engineering, math, and science by actively participating in hands-on sessions. Many District 211 students took advantage of last night's extended media center hours to study for finals. As a reminder, all District 211 schools will have extended media center hours to provide students with a quiet space to study for finals. Read below to find out what each school is doing for its extended hours this week. PHS: Students at Palatine High School will be able to study in the library during normal hours from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Students can then study in the library and café until 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 20. FHS Students Receive Free HCM Cardiac Screen

Students at Fremd High School participated in an event that could potentially save a life. Fremd High School offered free cardiac screenings for more than 1,680 students on Dec. 8. The screen was for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), a genetic heart condition that causes an excessive thickening of the heart and is the leading cause of sudden cardiac arrest in young people. “The test was very short, easy, and painless,” said Ian Wojciak, a Fremd High School senior and baseball player that participated in the screen. New Head Football Coach for Cougars

Bryan Stortz has been named varsity head football coach at James B. Conant High School, effective with the 2017 season.  Stortz is currently head coach at Rock Island (Ill.) High School and will take over the Cougars head coaching responsibilities from Bill Modelski.  Modelski is retiring after 12 seasons as the Cougars head coach, with five IHSA playoff appearances. Ever since she could remember, Palatine High School Senior Vivian Liu wanted to learn more about engineering. Her father, an electrical engineer, would come home and continue working on complex projects as she watched.
