All Schools Hosting Extended Media Center Hours for Finals Prep

All District 211 schools will have extended media center hours to provide students with a quiet space to study for finals. Read below to find out what each school is doing for its extended hours this week. PHS: Students at Palatine High School will be able to study in the library during normal hours from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Students can then study in the library and café until 9 p.m. on both Monday, Dec. 19, and Tuesday, Dec. 20. FHS Students Receive Free HCM Cardiac Screen

Students at Fremd High School participated in an event that could potentially save a life. Fremd High School offered free cardiac screenings for more than 1,680 students on Dec. 8. The screen was for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), a genetic heart condition that causes an excessive thickening of the heart and is the leading cause of sudden cardiac arrest in young people. “The test was very short, easy, and painless,” said Ian Wojciak, a Fremd High School senior and baseball player that participated in the screen. Fremd High School to Offer Free Cardiac Screen for Students

Fremd High School is offering free cardiac screenings for students on Dec. 7 and Dec. 8. The screen is for Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), which is a genetic heart condition that causes an excessive thickening of the heart and is the leading cause of sudden cardiac arrest in young people. The organization Young Hearts for Life will be conducting the test using an electrocardiogram (ECG). The screens will take place during school and are only for students whose parents authorize them to be tested. The screening is recommended every two years. District 211 Students Honored Veterans on Veterans Day

Schools in District 211 honored and recognized Veterans Day in many unique ways. Celebrations ranged from assemblies, to musical performances, letter writing, hallway decorations and giving thanks to local veterans. At Fremd High School, everyone was encouraged to participate in a Veterans Week Fundraising Competition the week of Nov. 7 – Nov. 11. Second period classes competed to raise the most money for the Soldier Project – Chicago Chapter, an organization aimed at healing the hidden wounds of combat and aiding soldiers in their return to civilian life. Palatine, Fremd, and Schaumburg High Schools will host Halloween events that are open to the community. The Fremd Student Council is inviting students ages 12 and under and parents to attend the annual Halloween Festival held at Fremd High School on Oct. 26 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. The school has been transformed for a fun night of trick-or-treating with games, toys, and candy. FHS is a proud teal pumpkin supporter, so there are plenty of prizes for all children. All children ages 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Students are often challenged by social pressures to experiment with drugs and other substances. The response to these challenges can have life-altering impact and frequently test young people's abilities to understand long-term consequences. High School District 211 will host the next Community Education Session at William Fremd High School, 1000 S. Fremd Guest Speaker Dr. Eugenia Cheng Makes Math Fun, Approachable For All

A guest speaker at Fremd High School helped students connect math to music, cooking, and several other aspects of daily life. Fremd High School hosted guest speaker Dr. Eugenia Cheng, a senior lecturer of Pure Mathematics at the University of Sheffield in the UK, a visiting senior lecturer at the University of Chicago, and currently a scientist in residence at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, on Sept. 26.
