District 211 to Discontinue Class Rank

At its Dec. 8, 2011 meeting, the Board of Education approved the recommendation of a District committee to discontinue the practice of ranking students based upon grade point average.  The committee’s recommendation is based upon a growing national trend among high schools to eliminate this practice because few, if any, colleges or universities continue to use class rank as a determining factor in the admissions process.

A two-phase process to eliminate Class Rank will be implemented, beginning with the 2012-2013 school year, class rank will be removed from report cards and transcripts.  Students in the class of 2013, however, will have the option to voluntarily report class rank within college or scholarship applications.  The practice of ranking students by GPA, either weighted or non-weighted, will be fully eliminated beginning with the class of 2014.
