District 211 bands were well represented at a recent jazz festival.

The Fremd High School Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combo, and Jazz Lab Band recently performed at the 39th Annual North Shore Jazz Festival at Glenbrook South High School. Additionally, top jazz bands from Palatine, Conant, and Schaumburg High Schools received “Division 1/Superior” ratings.

“We are very proud of our three ensembles that performed at the Northshore Jazz Festival,” said Matthew Moore, band director at Fremd High School. “The students in our Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Lab Band, and Jazz Combo worked hard to prepare a wide variety of jazz music and styles.”

Fremd’s Jazz Lab Band, which is directed by Jeremy Figlewicz and Sam Simpson, received three straight “Division 1/Superior” ratings in the second jazz band division. Additionally, the Jazz Lab Band tied for first place out of 12 total schools in the second jazz band division.  The Jazz Combo, directed by Simpson, also received straight “Division 1/Superior” ratings in their category.

In all of Fremd’s performances, the three ensembles received outstanding clinics from the jazz clinicians, which consisted of both collegiate and high school jazz educators.

“Performing at jazz festivals are always very worthwhile due to musical education that the students gain from preparing the music, as well as what they learn from the clinicians,” said Moore.

The Fremd Wind Symphony was busy performing their way to success this April.

The band was recognized for their performances at the Chicagoland Invitational Concert Band Festival hosted by Hersey High School, and the Illinois State University State of Illinois Invitational Concert Band Contest held at the ISU Center for the Performing Arts.

At the Chicagoland Invitational Festival, the band earned an overall “Division 1/Superior” rating in the top tier category.  This is a significant accomplishment for the group because the festival is adjudicated on the national level by college band directors.  The band also participated in a forty-five minute educational clinic with Dr. Mallory Thompson, director of bands at Northwestern University.

At the ISU Band Festival, the Wind Symphony was awarded three straight Division 1/Superior ratings by the collegiate adjudicators, as well as earning second place in the 6A school division.  The band also had the fourth highest point total out of 25 participating bands.

The Wind Symphony performed the following compositions at the two festivals: “Symphonic Suite” by Clifton Williams, “Be Thou My Vision” by Travis Cross, “Akatonbo” by Joseph Spaniola, and “Symphony No. 2 (Mvmt. 3 – Apollo Unleashed)” by Frank Ticheli. The Fremd Wind Symphony is under the direction of Matthew Moore, director of bands, and Jeremy Figlewicz, assistant band director.
