D211 Post: Hoffman Estates High School to Kick Off Summer Reading Program
Hoffman Estates High School will be hosting the #HawksRead Summer Reading Kick-Off to celebrate and help foster the love of reading. The event has two parts. During the school day on May 24th and 25th teachers have the opportunity to take their students to the HEHS Media Center to hear book talks, see recommendations from staff and students, hear about Schaumburg Public Library’s programs and opportunities, take part in a raffle for spirit wear and potentially take home a book. The second part of the event is on May 25th from 4:30-6:30 PM at the tents next to the baseball fields and will be much the same experience, just outside for those students who are still attending school remotely.
Kristy Loughin-Vance, English teacher, and organizer of the event said, “We want to help students get excited about reading by safely coming together to share good literature, a good time and get books in hands.”
Loughin-Vance received a book grant through Open Books Chicago and secured a book donation from Half Priced Books in Schaumburg and these books will be available to students who are interested. Liz Hernandez and the HEHS library staff have been creating opportunities for students to look at books in a contactless manner and have planned several stations to allow for social distancing and safety.
All Hawks are welcome to attend, enjoy and help us strengthen our community of readers.
