Update: HEHS Student Named U.S. Presidential Scholar
Out of 500 students to be selected as U.S. Presidential Scholarship semifinalists, 141 scholars were announced and Hoffman Estates High School senior Mengran “Meran” Liu is one of two students to represent the state of Illinois in Washington D.C.
Meran will be recognized in Washington D.C. on June 16 at an awards ceremony where she will receive a Presidential Scholar Medallion.
The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars, appointed by President Obama, selects honored scholars annually based on their academic success, artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as evidence of community service, leadership, and demonstrated commitment to high ideals.
Liu selected Steve Loh as her most influential teacher, and he will have the opportunity to attend the annual ceremony where he will be honored with a Teacher Recognition Award from the U.S. Department of Education. Loh taught science at Hoffman Estates High School until he retired last year.
